Evergreen guide
Your first physiotherapy visit, without the brochure gloss
The first appointment is mostly listening and looking. It is not a movie montage of miracle hands. This guide is for people on the Gold Coast — or anywhere in Australia — who want the sequence in plain language.
At a glance
- Your story sets the exam
- History first
- The body is tested, not guessed
- Then movement
- Not a lifetime contract
- A working plan
- One visit is not a cure
- No guarantees
Before you go
Write down:
- when it started and what you were doing
- what makes it better or worse
- other health conditions and medicines
- your actual goal (sleep, lifting a child, a shift, a paddle)
Bring imaging if you already have it. Do not delay care just to collect scans.
In the room
A typical sequence:
- Consent and questions — you can decline any test.
- History — including red-flag screening questions.
- Physical exam — look, move, sometimes measure.
- Explanation — a working idea, with uncertainty named if it exists.
- Plan — what you will try before the next visit, if there is one.
Hands-on treatment may happen on day one or not. That is not a quality score.
Afterward
Soreness after a new assessment can occur. Severe new symptoms, chest pain, or sudden neurological change are not “normal post-physio” — seek medical care.
What this guide is not
A substitute for the clinic’s own intake form, or for emergency advice.
Questions, answers first
What people ask on this topic
Conversation about your history, a physical assessment, a working explanation, and an agreed plan — not a guaranteed fix.
What happens in a first physio appointment?
Movable clothing that lets the clinician see the joint, plus reports and braces you already have.
What to wear to physio?
Usually no, unless a funding pathway says otherwise.
Do I need a GP referral for physio in Australia?
