Injury rehab is a sequence, not a slogan
Rehab is the unglamorous middle of physiotherapy: restoring range, rebuilding capacity, and deciding what “better” means for work, sleep, and sport. This page maps the language — not your personal protocol.
At a glance
- Load usually increases in steps
- Graded
- Plans change when you are reassessed
- Reviewed
- We will not invent your timeline
- Not a week count
- “Can I train?” depends
- Exercise is clinical
The idea of stages (overview only)
Clinicians and textbooks often describe rehab in phases. The labels vary. A cautious public version looks like this:
- Settle and protect — manage irritability, sleep, and obvious aggravators. This is not always “complete rest”.
- Restore range and basic control — get the joint or region moving in a tolerated way.
- Rebuild capacity — strength, endurance, and confidence under load.
- Return to task — work, care-giving, or sport-specific practice.
- Review — because setbacks happen and plans should change.
These are teaching headings, not a promise that you will pass through them on a timetable.
Can you exercise while in rehab?
Often, yes, some exercise is the treatment, not a contradiction of it. The forbidden list and the allowed list are individual. Pain during a movement is information; chasing pain is not a method we endorse here.
If you train in a commercial gym or in the surf, tell the clinician the truth about volume. Hidden load is a common reason plans stall.
What we will not publish
- A downloadable “return to sport checklist” that clears you
- Percentage strength targets as if they apply to every knee
- Claims that a particular machine, tape, or shockwave brand is required
How this sits next to other hubs
Sports physiotherapy talks about the context of the injury. This page talks about the sequence of getting capacity back. Post-surgical care adds the surgeon’s constraints. Read them as a set, not as competing products.
Questions, answers first
What people ask on this topic
Often some exercise is part of rehab, but which movements and how much is a clinical decision. Do not copy a stranger’s program.
Can I exercise while in rehab?
Return-to-sport is usually criteria agreed with your clinician — not a public checklist that clears you to compete.
Return-to-sport checklist?
Nobody honest can name your session count from a webpage.
How many sessions might I need?
Rehab questions belong in the room
Use this overview to ask better questions. Do not treat a stage diagram as permission to add load.
